Having Sweet Dreams Tonight

Insomnia is one of the most common sleep problems. According to the 2002 survey of the general population in Singapore, 200 out of the 430 respondents (ages 18-64) had insomnia. Of these 200 people, only 10% seek medical advice. Nearly 50% of them underestimate the importance of sleep difficulties. Of these 200 people, 65% believed that using sleeping pills to help sleep is not safe, and 82% worry about developing and addition to sleep drugs.

The combined effects of insomnia include the difficulty of getting back to sleep after waking up in the middle of the night or getting up early in the morning, and the emotional irritability, tiredness, and lack of concentration the next day.

Time lag, noisy sleeping environment, stressful life, abnormal sleep and rest, suffering from underlying mental illness (such as depression or anxiety), chronic drug or alcohol abuse, health problems (such as physical insomnia, frequent urination), etc. are the causes of insomnia.

When the former medical community treated insomnia, it depended on the assistance of drugs such as sedatives, antidepressants or sleeping pills. However, the effect of traditional sleeping pills is limited and can only be used as a temporary treatment. And depending on the drug used, serious consequence may occur; it may lead to high blood pressure, dizziness, and even addiction, or even interfere with the normal sleep cycle.

After years of scientific research, it has been shown that melatonin is a safer and more reliable alternative to drugs, regardless of the quality or quantity of sleep. Not only is it not addictive, but as long as the circadian rhythm returns to normal, you can stop taking it. If it becomes recurrent, take it again. It can be considered as the only natural sleep aid that can improve sleep disorders caused by physical problems.

What is Melatonin?

Melatonin is one of the hormones produced in the brain and is responsible for telling the body that it is already evening. During the day, when the retina detects light stimulation, the production of melatonin is inhibited and it will only flow into the blood at night. The level of natural melatonin in the body will slowly decline with age, so older people are more likely to suffer from insomnia than children, and also relatively light sleep.

The human body has an essential amino acid called tryptophan, which cannot be synthesized by itself. It must be taken through the diet. Tryptophan can be converted into "serotonin" in the body, and serotonergic can calm the nerves and make people feel relaxed and enhance their memory and attention. Tryptophan and serotonin, on the other hand, can promote the synthesis of melatonin and thus help to sleep.

Scientists' research also proved that taking melatonin in the afternoon can deceive the body's biological clock, thinking that it is now much later than the actual time and will soon fall asleep. As shown above, a very small amount of melatonin is naturally present in foods, mainly meat, cereals, fruits and vegetables, and its extracts are also widely used as sleep aids.

Health Benefits

In addition to helping sleep and jet lag, it can also improve Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), which can medically reduce the use of sedative drugs and reduce migraine attacks. Rate, prevention of cardiovascular disease, improvement of gastroesophageal reflux (Gerd) and heartburn (Heart Burn), beneficial to dementia - Alzheimer's disease, and improvement of atopic dermatitis.

Suggestion

Patients with sleep disorders are advised to take no more than 5 mg of melatonin before bedtime to help establish a normal sleep pattern.

The effects of melatonin vary from person to person. Some people only need low doses to achieve their sleep acuity. Some people need higher doses to help sleep. It is recommended to take until the symptoms are completely improved.
